Commission orders Google to open search data and Android to rival AI assistants

The European Commission issued two sets of binding specification measures against Google under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). In case DMA.100209 (Article 6(11) DMA), it ordered Google to share anonymised data on queries, rankings, clicks and views with rival search engines and providers of AI chatbots with search functionality (e.g. OpenAI's ChatGPT), on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms; sharing is to start in January 2027. In case DMA.100220 (Article 6(7) DMA), it ordered Google to give rival AI assistants (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.), from July 2027, the same level of access to around eleven Android features as its own assistant Gemini currently has – grouped into invocation (custom wake words, gestures such as a long press on the home button) and context (access to app data, keyboard, proactive suggestions) categories.
