Amodei has called for a slowdown, and Altman and Musk have joined him

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, has published an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier” arguing that the pace at which the capabilities of AI models are increased must be slowed. He proposes three steps: that every company developing AI models at the frontier of current capabilities (a frontier AI company) give an independent team permanent, employee-level access, including the right to publish its findings without editorial control by that company; then common safety standards among democratic states; and eventually international limits on the most dangerous capabilities, such as recursive self-improvement. Sam Altman of OpenAI stated on X that he agrees with Amodei, that a commitment to independent evaluators with employee-like access is a good idea and that OpenAI will do the same; Elon Musk of xAI and Demis Hassabis of Google DeepMind also voiced their agreement.
